The knowledge can be applied to tolerate withdrawal, navigate triggers, manage emotions, and cope with stress.
The left lung on this design explains how the body and mind is affected when you breathe deep and fast to increase the oxygen levels in your blood.
Likewise, the right lung explains the effects of breathing slowly to decrease the oxygen levels in your blood.
This design is intended to raise awareness of the opioid crisis plaguing Sudbury Ontario and many other places.
It depicts Sudbury’s iconic water tower overlooking the Crosses for Change opioid overdose memorial site.
Like the water tower that has been vandalized, then partially painted over, leaving only the top bits of the word sudbury and a crown of rust exposed; the opioid crisis has also been addressed with minimum effort.
“Save our Sudbury” used with permission from the Save our Sudbury (SOS) community organization. Although their focus is on the detrimental effects of the Laurentian University insolvency on the city of Sudbury, we share a mutual goal to protect and strengthen our community.

Practicing CBT may not completely cure all these issues on its own. However, it's extremely effective at managing mental difficulties, regaining control of emotions, and preventing damaging behaviours.
Unlike medications that can work for a while but lose effectiveness as tolerances grow, CBT only becomes more effective while practiced over time. It also won't cause unwanted side effects.

One of the turning points in my recovery was when I stopped caring about what people think and told my work, family, and friends about my struggle so I could not hide it so easily. Acting on impulse can often perpetuate the cycle of addiction. Even after making it through withdrawal, the inability to cope with life can send someone right back to the only comfort they can remember, substance use.
That is why learning to take a moment and think before acting on emotions can be a powerful tool in recovery. Acting without considering the consequences may destroy any progress made, or make difficult situations much worse.
Even for those that are not challenged by addiction, practising emotional intelligence ensures that the choices you make are in line with the life you want to live.

This design also explores the effects of breathing techniques. It is simpler than the design featuring lungs and focuses specifically on prepping for physical activity or shifting into a more relaxed state. Being aware of how breathing can affect mental and physical state can be a very useful tool in recovery. It allows you to recognize when withdrawal is causing you to breathe more rapidly and trigger anxiety. It also gives you something to focus on as you attempt to shift into a more relaxed mode. Breathing techniques won’t eliminate the pain and discomfort felt in withdrawal, but it helps moderate some of the symptoms.
